Secrets to Achieving Voluntary Organization Efficiency

Voluntary sector senior executives participating in the Charitable-Philanthropic Organization Self-Renewing Management Model (C-POSRM) Study (Connors, 2013), identified and ranked in descending order the following management activities and actions in terms of their perceived value in achieving improved levels of organizational efficiency:

• Accountability
• Financial Management
• Performance improvement
• Accounting
• Knowledge Management
• Revenue/Resource Development
• Performance measurement
• Fund-Raising
• Information Technology
• Performance analysis and review
• Information Management
• Measurement and analysis
• Process Management
• Work processes design/management
• Work systems design/management
• Grantsmanship
• Nonprofit Economics

Regardless of the size or type of the charitable organization involved or the experience of its executives, there was strong executive agreement regarding the important contributions to achieving efficiency by management actions and activities that included: accountability, financial management, performance improvement, accounting, knowledge management, revenue/resource development, performance measurement, fundraising, information technology, performance analysis and review, and measurement and analysis – and in that general order of perceived importance.

Management Actions and Activities Most Contributory to Overall Organizational Efficiency

Accountability, financial management, and performance improvement were the top ranked management actions and/or activities identified by all charitable organization executives as contributors to improved efficiency. Regardless of the size or type of the charitable organization involved or the experience of its executives, there is strong executive agreement regarding the important contributions to achieving Efficiency by management actions and activities that include: accountability, financial management, performance improvement, accounting, knowledge management, revenue/resource development, performance measurement, fundraising, information technology, performance analysis and review, and measurement and analysis – and in that general order of perceived importance.
